Clinical Experience
Curriculum
Residents switch between Internal Medicine and Pediatrics rotations every four months for the first two years of their residency. After the first half of the third year, residents are free to switch back and forth between Medicine to Pediatrics. Although the first year schedule is assigned, much of the rotation schedule for the second through fourth years can be planned and selected by the resident.
Ambulatory Block
One of the most unique aspects of the Internal Medicine/Pediatrics program is the ambulatory block. This is a five-month block during third and fourth year, where residents can choose from several different ambulatory rotations. Residents have the opportunity to select a rotation from any of the Pediatric or Internal Medicine subspecialties, or other rotations including radiology, ophthalmology, gynecology, and sports medicine. A resident may plan their own month and dedicate it to research or mastering various procedures. Most of the time spent during this block will be entirely call free. A unique conference dedicated to board review and the study of various topics in the combined programs is held once a week.
Continuity Clinic
Starting from the first month of their intern year, residents participate in the continuity clinic for a half-day each week. This is where they develop professional relationships with patients that they will be in contact with throughout their four years. Residents see both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics patients. After the first 16 months of residency, residents move on to spend two half-days per week in the continuity clinic.
International Track
Pediatrics has a specially designated international track dedicating weekly lectures to international medicine. Residents build up to a one-month rotation during their third or fourth year training overseas at one of several various sites. Residents can also choose to design their own international rotation.
