How old is WSU/DMC Med-Peds program?

Our program was established in 1987.

How many residents have completed WSU/DMC Med-Peds Program?

147 residents have completed our program.

How many residents are currently in the WSU/DMC Med-Peds Program?

We have 22 residents in the Med-Peds program.

What percentage of WSU/DMC Med-Peds graduates enter a career in primary care?

80% over the lifetime of the program.

What percentage of WSU/DMC Med-Peds graduates has pursued subspecialty training?

20% over the lifetime of the program pursue subspecialty training. 

The most popular subspecialty has been hematology/oncology and cardiology are both popular for pediatrics and internal medicine. One of first residents completed their hematology/oncology fellowship at NIH.

Have your graduates been able to obtain positions outside of the Detroit area?

Yes.  Most recently residents have gravitated to the city of Atlanta and the states of Texas & New York.  Several residents choose to stay in the state of Michigan but outside of Detroit, including Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo. Approximately 35% of residents stay within the Detroit and Detroit metro area.

How many of your graduates of gone into academic medicine?

Approximately 30% of our graduates have gone into academic medicine at some point in their career.

The current program director of the pediatrics program at Children's Hospital of Michigan is a former graduate of our program.  Our program director and associate program directors are both graduates of our program.  The associate program director also currently serves as the chief of medicine at Detroit Receiving.  Multiple other graduates have joined as faculty in internal medicine, pediatrics or both.

How many of your graduates have gone into Health Service Core or joined a HQFC?

We have had 20 graduates enter either the Health Service Core or joined a HQFC.

How long is internship at WSU/DMC Med-Peds Program?

The internship is 16 blocks long where blocks are 4 weeks each (eight blocks in Medicine and eight blocks in Pediatrics).

In WSU/DMC Med-Peds Program what is the schedule for changing from Medicine to Pediatrics?

The first two postgraduate years consists of alternating 4 block and 5 block segments.

The third and fourth years are scheduled per the resident for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 consecutive alternating blocks.

What percentage of the curriculum is devoted to ambulatory training?

Historically, greater than 50% of our training has been devoted to ambulatory training.

What is WSU/DMC Med-Peds attrition rate?

Approximately 2% over the life of the program and 0% over the last 5 years.

Is there an opportunity to take international electives?

Yes, there are opportunities to do international electives through the pediatrics department or internal medicine department. These opportunities are arranged on an individual bases. 

How do WSU/DMC Med-Peds residents perform on the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Pediatrics certification examinations?

Our residents' performance on the boards equals and in some cases exceeds the performance of residents in the categorical programs.

What recent changes have occurred in WSU/DMC Med-Peds  Program?

Our residents instituted a monthly Med-Peds journal club dedicated to topics spanning internal medicine and pediatrics. Our journal club is distinguished from the categorical programs in that our residents have the opportunity to present relevant Med-Peds topics and interact with various categorial and combined subspecialists.

Is moonlighting allowed?

Yes. Moonlighting is available but opportunities are limited and ared determined on a case by case basis.
